While baking cookies with the children recently, they inquired as to why we go to church each week. I rambled on about God’s love and quoted Hebrews 10:25 which says,
And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Seeing the glazed look in their eyes, I quickly concluded my mini-lecture by reminding them that church is one of the places we learn about God. My oldest quickly added, “Yeah, and you can’t love someone you don’t know much about.” Her comment was insightful and convicting. There is so much about the Lord I’m still learning and must remain hungry to know Him more.
Likewise, the same is true for my husband.
Jason is an A+ student of our family. He knows the children so well it is unreal. For instance, the night we moved into our new house, my husband let the children choose a colored light bulb to place in the lamps near their beds. In some semi-psychic way, he had every color they requested. A few of my children have an absolute favorite color; so knowing to buy those color bulbs was relatively easy, but two of my kids change their minds often, and yet he knew what their choices would be because he pays attention. He’s equally as in-tune with me, which is sweet when he buys the perfect gift, but annoying when he calls me out on my sinful motives I’m sure were hidden from all.
I am not a great student of Jason.
I don’t always know what meal he would order at a restaurant or what his favorites are. I’m sure he has dreams and priceless memories he might share… if I would only ask.
This year, I want to be intentional in asking my husband one question every day.
Some will bring up his past, others address the present, and a few will lead him to discuss the future or come up with an answer to a fictional scenario. Most will be about him, but some will be about me. I want to give him the chance to address any frustrations or desires on how I am doing as a wife by telling me how I can better love and listen to him. While some are fun, others might stir up some conflict. And that’s okay. These questions are a tool to help me study my husband well.
With the start of a new year around the corner, I want to give you the opportunity to do this too!

Darby… thank you beyond measure for this incredible resource. I read these,
Ok- most of them, and they brought tears to my eyes. They are not only wonderful questions and most appropriate for any relationship, but I thought of how much better I could know Mark after a year of asking these of him…even after 34 years of marriage (or is it 35? sigh).
You really touched my heart with this one.
