My children were getting out of the shower when they made a comment about how our family will be together forever. I should have captured that moment to reinforce verbally that our family is committed to each other. I should have relished in the security of my children, but my mind didn’t rest in the sweetness of their words. Instead, it took a drastic detour down memory lane as I hummed “We Go Together” from the movie Grease. Nausea quickly set in as I remembered an old scrapbook that I found (over a decade ago) in Jason’s bachelor pad shortly after we started dating. This scrapbook was a gift to him from an ex-girlfriend, and it contained many highlights from their time together. One page of the scrapbook had photos of the two of them dressed as the characters Danny and Sandy. The quotes artistically placed around the page consisted of lyrics from the song “We Go Together.”
We go together,
Like rama lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong… We’re for each other, Like woo baba lumop a wap bam boom… We’ll always be together (Chang chang changitty chang shoobop) We’ll always be together (Chang chang changitty chang shoobop) We’ll always be together (Chang chang changitty chang shoobop) We’ll always be together (Chang chang changitty chang shoobop) We’ll always be together
The first time I saw that scrapbook I stared at the page memorizing every detail. I imagined the possible conversations, jokes, and promises that took place around those lyrics. I daydreamed the two of them singing to each other how they go together, are there for each other, and will always be together. All the intimate conversations that I “overheard” (ahem, imagined) forever were burned into my mind. They became like a ghost that comes haunting anytime a line that sounds similar to a song is spoken.
All it took was one sweet comment from my children, and my mind went straight to my husband’s distant past.
As I shared my thoughts with Jason, he lovingly said that I am the only one keeping those memories alive. In fact, he didn’t even remember that he had gone on a date dressed as Danny. Last year on Halloween I wrote an article entitled, Are Ghosts Haunting Your Marriage? which ran on the Unveiled Wife blog. Apparently, I am still getting spooked!
In honor of October 31st (and the most recent memory that I shared with you today) I thought I would share that post again (Click here to read it).
