Happy Valentine’s Day!
As mentioned on this month’s printable prayer calendar (which is free to all blog subscribers), I am posting specific Scriptures we can pray for our husbands and marriages today. You will find those at the bottom of today’s post.
I want to quickly share how my day has been so far, and what God is teaching me. As many of you know, Valentine’s Day is always a trigger for me to dwell on past hurts. I’m happy to say that today has indeed been better. I began the morning texting a friend who helps hold me accountable to ask her for prayers. Then, during some prayer time this morning, I had the chance to journal, and the Lord kept taking me back to 1 John 4:19,
We love because he first loved us.
It doesn’t matter if my husband lives up to my expectations or not. It doesn’t matter if he romances me in the way I desire or not at all. I don’t have to withhold affection or stonewall if today (or any day) turns out less than I expect. I should love him because the Lord loves me. That is such a simple truth, but one I often forget in the midst of pressure to have the perfect holiday.
Jason has been sweet and intentional today, as always, and starting the morning out with truth and accountability has allowed me to appreciate his efforts fully. This year is our fifteenth Valentine’s Day together, and yet it is the first one where I’m not comparing or demanding. 1 Corinthians 13 speaks a lot to my attitude, and so, after reading several different versions of this chapter, I came up with this paraphrase to help remind myself of what I can do for others because of what God does for me. Hope these descriptions of love help you as they have encouraged me!
Love never gives up. It is patient and very kind, love cares more for others than for self.
Love is never jealous or envious; Love does not want what it doesn’t have.
Love is never boastful or proud, Love doesn’t strut, it doesn’t have a swelled head.
Love is never haughty or selfish or rude. Love isn’t always “me- first”.
Love does not demand its own way or force itself on others.
Love is not irritable or touchy. Love does not fly off the handle.
Love does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong.
Love doesn’t keep score of the sins of others.
Love is never glad about injustice, in fact, love is not happy with evil.
Love doesn’t revel when others grovel.
Love takes pleasure, and even rejoices whenever truth wins out.
If you love, you will be loyal no matter what the cost.
Love always protects.
Love trusts God always.
Love never looks back, but keeps going to the end.
How Are You Loving Well Today?

Valentine Scriptures to Pray For Your Husband:
- I pray that my husband would love me as Jacob loved Rachel (Genesis 29:20).
- Praying that my husband would place me like a seal over his heart (Song of Solomon 8:6).
- I pray that my husband would love me as he loves himself and that I will respect him (Ephesians 5:33).
- Praying that the Lord would bind my husband and me in perfect unity through love (Colossians 3:14).
- I pray that my husband and I will be patient and kind. That we will not be envious, boastful, proud, rude, or self-seeking. Help us not to be easily angered or keep any record of wrongs. May we not delight in evil but rejoice with the truth. May we always protect, always trust, always hope, and always persevere (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
