My dream the night was surreal, and I couldn’t shake it when I woke up. I was in the sanctuary of my church praying, out loud, over the people who were sitting in the seats. The first thing that crossed my mind in the morning was a “fun fact” that I heard years ago while serving on the mission field. As I was getting used to the local language, I began writing in my journal in Spanish. Pridefully, I assumed I was becoming fluent, but someone told me that you achieve fluency when you begin to dream in that language.
When I woke up from a dream where I was praying, I kept thinking,
I want to be fluent in prayer.
Doing a quick google search of the word fluent, I found this:
I would love to be able to express myself easily and articulately to the Lord. Often complaining and grumbling seem to be my natural language, so prayer does, at times, feel like a foreign language I’m trying to master. With immersion and practice, I do hope that my conversations with the Lord will flow freely and abundantly.
A woman who is fluent in prayer blesses her whole family.
Just as there are different styles of learning a language, there are different ways to learn how to pray. As I thought about becoming fluent in my prayers for my husband, I realized I need to add some creativity to my prayer life. I don’t know if you are like me, but the same style of praying leaves me in a rut.
Here’s the list I’ve come up with so far on creative ways to pray for my husband:
- If you stop by your husband’s work, take a prayer walk around his work praying for his career.
- Whenever you drive his car, pray that he will allow Jesus to drive his life.
- Give your husband a back or body massage and pray for his muscles and bones to be strong.
- Hold your husband’s hand, and pray that he will use his hands to bless others and extend his hands to the needy.
- When cooking him dinner, pray that he won’t live on bread alone.
- While you put his dirty clothes into the washer, pray for his “dirty laundry.”
- When folding and putting away his clothes, pray for that specific part of your husband’s body to be healthy.
- Set your phone alarm to go off daily with a reminder to pray for him and your marriage.
- When you lay down in bed, pray that your husband will keep the marriage bed pure.
- Text him throughout the day and ask what he wants you to be praying for specifically.
- Purchase and work through For the Love of Our Husbands and, if you’re on Facebook, join the group.
- Create a prayer spot in your house that you visit every day that invites you to sit/kneel and pray for your husband.
- Pray for your husband every time your wedding ring (or a wedding photo) catches your eye.
- Buy yourself a “Praying for My Husband” bracelet and pray for your husband whenever you see it.
- Pick certain songs that remind you of your husband and pray for him every time they come on the radio.
- Whenever you rub his feet or pick up his shoes, pray that the Word will be a lamp unto his feet and a light onto his path.
- Whenever your husband gets a haircut or pulls weeds, pray that God will prune him and cut back anything in his life that is unholy.
- As you drink water, pray that your husband would pant for the Lord as a deer pants for water.
- If you see someone fishing (or a sign for fish on sale at the grocery), pray that your husband will be a fisher of men.
- In the shower, pray for God to create in your husband a clean heart and wash away his sin.
- When he brushes his teeth, pray that he will control his tongue and that his lips will always praise God.
